# Amethyst — Crystal Guide

Part of the Gemnorra Crystal Guide. Read our [disclaimer](../disclaimer.md).

About the stone

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, colored by trace amounts of iron and

natural irradiation. Its color ranges from pale lavender to deep violet, and

it is one of the most widely recognized and affordable gemstones.

Cultural meaning

Historically, amethyst has been associated in various traditions with calm,

clarity and mindful living. The ancient Greeks believed the name came from a

word meaning “not drunken,” and it was worn as a talisman of temperance. These

associations are cultural traditions, not scientific properties.

Wear it with

  • Everyday office wear — a beaded bracelet or small pendant
  • Silver or white-gold tones that complement its cool purple
  • Rose quartz for a soft, contrasting palette

Care

  • Clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and long sun exposure, which can

fade the color.

  • Store separately from harder stones to prevent scratching.
